Welcome on the homepage of Khanty database!
Khanty (Ostyak), with Mansi (Vogul) and Hungarian, form the Ugric branch of the Finno-Ugric language family. Khanty and Mansi are closely related languages. As their speakers live along the river Ob and its tributaries in Northwest Siberia, they are also called Ob-Ugric languages.
The texts on this homepage all represent the Surgut subdialect of Eastern Khanty. It is spoken by about 2000 persons around the city Surgut within a 300-kilometer radius. The texts show a great variety of style and vocabulary; they include chapters from a first reader, school essays, tales, newspaper articles, belletristic writings, and folklore texts.
The texts are supplied with morphological and categorial annotations, and Hungarian and English translations sentence by sentence. The spellings of the original sources – whether they use Cyrillic or Latin scipt – differ in many respects. Therefore we have set up a phonemic spelling system, and have transcribed all the texts into it. It contains the following characters:

Naturally, the database does not contain examples of all linguistic phenomena typical of Surgut Khanty; furthermore, the annotations, simplifying by nature, do not allow exhaustive explanations. For further information, see the following sources:
