***Khanty Database***

Welcome on the homepage of Khanty database!

Khanty (Ostyak), with Mansi (Vogul) and Hungarian, form the Ugric branch of the Finno-Ugric language family. Khanty and Mansi are closely related languages. As their speakers live along the river Ob and its tributaries in Northwest Siberia, they are also called Ob-Ugric languages.

The texts on this homepage all represent the Surgut subdialect of Eastern Khanty. It is spoken by about 2000 persons around the city Surgut within a 300-kilometer radius.

About the origin of the database

The database has been developed at the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics. It is based on a Khanty language course held in 2019–2022 by Márta Csepregi for the participants of project 129921 of NKFIH entitled Implications of endangered Uralic languages for syntactic theory and the history of Hungarian. The Surgut Khanty texts studied in the language course, including about 1000 sentences, were transcribed, morphologically annotated, and translated into Hungarian by Márta Csepregi; they have been translated into English by Katalin É. Kiss. The database and online interface has been developed by Zsanett Ferenczi.

The texts show a great variety of style and vocabulary; they include chapters from a first reader, school essays, tales, newspaper articles, belletristic writings, and folklore texts. Since this material was originally compiled for educational purposes, some of the texts appear in an abbreviated form.

The database can be cited as follows:

About the transcription

The texts are supplied with morphological and categorial annotations, and Hungarian and English translations sentence by sentence. The spellings of the original sources – whether they use Cyrillic or Latin scipt – differ in many respects. Therefore we have set up a phonemic spelling system, and have transcribed all the texts into it. It contains the following characters:

Surgut Khanty vowels

long short reduced
front back front back
rounded unrounded rd unr rd unr rd unr
close i u y ü ə
mid e o ö ŏ
open a å ä ă

Surgut Khanty consonants

bilabial alveolar palatal velar
nasal m n ń ŋ
stop p t ť k (q)
affricate č
fricative w s (š) j ɣ
lateral voiceless fricative ʌ ʎ
lateral approximant l
trill r
We followed the Leipzig Glossing Rules, and employed their abbreviations adapted to the linguistic properties of Khanty.

The proofreading of the database was carried out by Zsófia Schön, to whom we owe special thanks for her careful work.

Further literature

Naturally, the database does not contain examples of all linguistic phenomena typical of Surgut Khanty; furthermore, the annotations, simplifying by nature, do not allow exhaustive explanations. For further information, see the following sources:
